Salvation

Salvation is the process by which God frees man from sin and damnation. Those who obtain salvation and end their lives in a state of grace become saints when they die.

Salvation outside the Church

The traditional doctrine is that there is no salvation outside the Church, as stated by for example St. Cyprian of Carthage. Until recently this was the standard view not only among the Orthodox, but also Roman Catholics and Protestants (who applied it to their own bodies).
