Main article: Orthodox Church.

The term Eastern Orthodox Church refers simply to the Orthodox Church. This usage came about as a result of the Great Schism—since the papacy and subsequent Western heresies had fallen away, “Eastern” was simply a convenient descriptor to distinguish the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church from those denominations in the West which claimed to be such, as were other regional descriptors such as “Greek.”

Not to be confused with the deceptive misnomer Oriental Orthodox, that is, Monophysitism.
