Metropolitan Sergius—later declared Patriarch of Moscow under the control of Joseph Stalin—had been deputy locum tenens of the patriarchal throne during the brutal Bolshevik persecutions of the 1920s. Under immense pressure, he signed a declaration which not only recognized the Antichrist authority of the Soviets, but went so far as to fully renounce the spiritual freedom of the Orthodox Church by declaring Her subservience to the desires of the Bolsheviks, in spite of the fact that their desires were to eradicate all religion. As such, he is the founder of the Moscow Patriarchate as we know it today.
