Protopresbyter Alexander Schmemann was a World Orthodox academic theologian of the OCA who taught at St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary, of which he was the dean[1].

Fr. Alexander's teachings were so brazenly heretical that they were regarded as protestant, Fr. Seraphim Rose describing him (along with Fr. John Meyendorff and Abp. John Shahovskoy) as “traitors to Orthodoxy” who were leading the then-Metropolia (now known as the OCA) into “Eastern-Rite Protestantism” in a letter to another Fr. Seraphim. Regarding the invalid suspension of this priest by the OCA, Fr. Seraphim Rose claimed categorically that the the OCA hierarchy by unanimous endorsement of Fr. Alexander and the other two heretics are enemies of Christ and that one should depart from them in order to remain in the Church.[2]

In stark contrast, Fr. Alexander is highly regarded in much of World Orthodoxy outside of her most conservative circles. This is especially true of the large percentage of English-speaking clergy in America who have come through either St. Vladimir's or Saint Tikhon's Orthodox Theological Seminary.[3]
